Within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this volume investigates how sustainability is framed within European Union legislation and provides insights into the power relations embedded in legal discourse and, in particular, in specific lexicogrammatical choices in EU regulatory texts.
[...]
The volume offers a critical examination of how, in the context of sustainability discourse, accountability can be obscured while specific courses of action can be legitimised. More precisely, sustainability – frequently positioned in legal discourse as a foundational principle – is strategically constructed through language to foreground or mitigate crucial environmental, social, financial and economic objectives. Through comparative analysis of parallel English and Italian EU regulatory texts, the role of translation in shaping sustainability discourse is also investigated. The volume, intended for scholars in the fields of sustainability discourse and translation studies, offers critical insights into how legal discourse can, and does, influence sustainable development across diverse cultural and linguistic contexts.
